Privacy Policy

Effective September 18, 2026

PackaTag provides private lost-item recovery tools that connect an item owner with a person who scans a PackaTag. This policy explains what information we collect, why we use it, and the choices available to you.

1. Information we collect

Account and profile information

When you create an owner account, we may collect your email address, sign-in information, display name, username, avatar, alert preferences, and optional contact information. If you use Google sign-in, Google provides the account information needed to authenticate you.

Tag and item information

We collect tag codes, item names and categories, activation status, ownership history needed to operate transfers or deregistration, and recovery status.

Scans, recovery rooms, and messages

When a tag is scanned, we create a recovery session and record its time, status, technical session identifiers, approximate network location, messages, and actions such as confirming possession or leaving an item with staff. Owners and finders should not include sensitive information in chat unless it is necessary to arrange a safe return.

Location information

We may estimate a scan's general area from network information. A finder can separately choose to share device-provided location. Precise location is not requested without the finder's action and browser permission. Location information may be shown to the registered owner to help recover the item.

Support and technical information

We collect support requests and responses. We may also process IP address, browser and device type, timestamps, error logs, security events, and similar technical data needed to deliver and protect the service.

SMS alert information

If you choose to receive PackaTag text alerts, we collect your mobile number, verification status, consent record, alert preferences, message-delivery status, and opt-out status. We use this information only to provide transactional recovery alerts, administer consent, prevent abuse, and troubleshoot delivery.

2. How we use information

We do not sell personal information. We do not use recovery chats or precise location for targeted advertising. We do not sell or share your SMS opt-in data or personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

3. When information is shared

We share information only as needed to provide the service, including with infrastructure, authentication, database, hosting, email, security, and customer-support providers. A registered owner can see information associated with scans and recovery rooms for that owner's tags. A finder and owner can see messages exchanged in their recovery room. If an owner explicitly enables direct contact sharing, a finder with the valid recovery link can also see the owner's selected recovery email address, phone number, and associated display name. Owners can turn this sharing off in account settings. Authorized PackaTag administrators may access records when needed to provide support, investigate abuse, maintain the service, or comply with law.

We may disclose information in response to valid legal process, to protect users or the public, or as part of a merger, financing, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to applicable law.

4. Retention and security

We retain information while an account or recovery record is active and as reasonably needed for support, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, legal compliance, and service integrity. Retention periods may differ by record type. We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.

5. Your choices and rights

You can update profile, contact-sharing, and alert information in your account and deregister eligible tags. Direct contact sharing and SMS alerts are disabled by default. You may disable PackaTag SMS alerts in your account or reply STOP to opt out. Reply START to remove a carrier-level block, then re-enable alerts in your account if desired. You may ask to access, correct, or delete personal information by contacting support@packatag.com. We may need to verify your identity and may retain information where legally permitted or required. Depending on where you live, you may have additional privacy rights and the right to appeal a denied request.

6. Cookies and browser storage

PackaTag uses essential cookies and browser storage to authenticate accounts, maintain secure recovery sessions, preserve a finder chat when moving into a mobile browser, remember preferences, and protect the service. These technologies are necessary for core functionality. We currently do not use third-party advertising cookies. If we introduce optional analytics or advertising technologies, we will update this policy and provide any controls required by law.

7. Children

PackaTag owner accounts are not directed to children under 13. A person who finds an item may scan a tag without creating an account. If you believe a child has submitted personal information inappropriately, contact us so we can review and address it.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service changes. We will post the revised version with a new effective date and provide additional notice when legally required.

9. Contact us

Questions or privacy requests can be sent to support@packatag.com or submitted through the PackaTag support page.

PackaTag is built to help people reconnect with lost items without publishing an owner's phone number, email address, or home address on the item.
